Not Every Open Door Is God's Door
An open door is not proof of God's will. It's just proof that a door opened. Before you walk through it, check if it aligns with what God said, whether an opportunity is being confused with permission, and if peace is present instead of excitement.

Somebody handed you an opportunity this week. A job offer, a relationship, a partnership, a new house, a new city, a new title. Your first thought was probably, "This must be God!". You even went further to share the good news with others as a special testimony. I want you to slow down before you say yes, sign anything, or pack a single box.
The question I get asked more than others is: how do you know God's will when three good options are standing in front of you at the same time? My answer is: don't guess, discern!
Discernment Is A Discipline, Not A Feeling
Most people treat discernment like a rare spiritual gift, or a feeling that shows up when they need it. It is neither of those things. Discernment is a discipline; the daily practice of checking every invitation against what is true instead of running towards whatever looks exciting. This is discernment as decision-making, not discernment as a mood. Discernment is not being suspicious of every door that opens in front of you. Suspicion closes you off, while discernment opens your eyes. Suspicion protects you from opportunities; discernment protects you from deception. Learn the difference and stop confusing movement for direction.
3 Questions To Ask Before You Walk Through Any Door
Before you accept the next opportunity, ask yourself these three questions, out loud if you have to:
Does this align with what God has already said, or what I want right now? God doesn't contradict Himself. If He has spoken to you about who you are and where you are headed, any door pulling you away from that word needs a closer look. Excitement is not a word from God. It's a feeling, and feelings change as quickly as they come.
Opportunity does not equal permission. Just because you can walk through a door does not mean you should. You can say yes to things that were never built for you. Competence is not a calling. Ask honestly whether this door was built for your assignment or became available.
Is this a distraction or an opportunity? Some doors open because you knocked, prayed and prepared. While some open to pull you away from the one God already built for you. What is the actual source of this invitation? When you honestly ask this question, listen to what peace says, not what excitement says. Excitement will talk you into anything. Peace will tell you the truth.
Is This God's Door?
That is the real question underneath all three. Not, "Does this look good?" or " Does this feel exciting?" But, "Is this God's door?" A door tied to His word will still be standing when the excitement fades. A door built only on emotion might not survive it.
Caution Before You Move
Don't treat every opportunity like a calling. Not every invitation carries God's fingerprints. Some doors are simply doors. They are neutral; they're not evil or holy. They are just open, and it is your job to check before you walk in. This is why discernment matters more than excitement, urgency, or the latest trends. I shed more light on direction and purpose in my latest post, Switch On Your G.P.S. If you haven't read it yet, you can read it here. That post lays the foundation this one builds on: God, Purpose, and Service. The right compass to check every open door against!
Ask Before You Walk In
This is your assignment this week. The next time you want to say yes to any opportunity, big or small, stop and ask the three questions. Write down what peace is telling you, not what excitement is screaming. Then compare the invitation to what you already know God has said about your assignment. Discern before you leap. Not every open door is God's door. Some are just doors; always ask before you walk in.
